Geological Modelling

Understanding the geological controls on grade distribution throughout a mineral deposit is key to the development of a robust assessment of mining potential. A 2D or 3D computerised model of geology and grade is fundamental to modern Mineral Resource estimation. Attention to geological interpretation and domaining yields the most robust estimate from a given sample set.

Services

  • Wireframe modelling of any mineral deposit type utilising state of the art software packages
  • Modelling of deposits at various stages: from drill targeting models for grass-roots exploration through to detailed models for feasibility studies
  • 3D trend analysis using Leapfrog software, a semi-automated modelling package, utilising geological or quality constraints
  • Re-modelling/domaining based upon additional detailed sample or geological/structural information or to overcome grade estimation problems
  • 2D regularisation of data to enhance visible interpretation of patterns/trends

Approach

The geological interpretation process starts with first hand site inspection, meetings and discussions with site geologists and review of reports and previous models and estimates. This may involve some re-logging of core and sketching out ideas to ensure the most has been made of available information and thinking on site.

SRK utilises a wide variety of computerised modelling methodologies, selected to suit the deposit geometry, mineralisation controls, technical characteristics and downstream mine planning requirements.

SRK will compile geological and structural maps, detailed sample logs, laboratory assay data, mineralogical analyses, geophysics, mine working surveys etc. Once the data is imported and validated, SRK carefully considers the setting, genesis, distribution, remobilisation and man made influences on mineralisation, as well as the patterns of alteration, mineralogy, weathering and other physical attributes important for project evaluation to determine the most appropriate modelling and domaining criteria.

Experience

SRK has extensive international experience in computerised geological modelling and domaining of most deposit types and commodities. Our consultants understand the importance of geological controls during modelling, and the significance it has in subsequent statistical and geostatistical studies and robust tonnage and quality/grade estimation.

SRK has the capability to produce computerised geological models in any required software package to suit the needs of the client, including Datamine, Gemcom, Vulcan, Surpac, Minex, Micromine, Leapfrog and Geomodeller and can write routines to interface between these and other specialist in-house software packages.
