11th meeting of the Almaty Mining Club

July 16, 2014 -- SRK Consulting (Kazakhstan) with support from Rio Tinto have conducted the 11th meeting of the Almaty Mining Club. The guests were AIG representatives Ian Neuss and Bill Amann, en route their trip in vintage 1920 Dodge and 1927 Whippet across the Eurasian continent (see bonditothebaltic.blogspot.com).  

The first talk “Australian Institute of Geoscientists: Supporting Geoscientists” was delivered by Ian Neuss. Ian is a graduate of UNE in Australia with over 30 years exploration experience. He was manager of Outokumpu in Australia and currently is an AIG Counciller. His talk was about what AIG offers to its members and why and how Kazakhstan should have its own.

The second presentation was on “Geotourism: An Australian Travel Log with Geological Significance” delivered by Bill Amann. Bill is Managing Director and Principal Geophysicist of Newexco Services Pty Ltd in Perth, Western Australia.  Newexco has contributed to the discovery of numerous deposits over 15 years, including the discovery of Fly Fox and Spotted Quill, for which they won the Prospector of the Year in 2009. Bill has 34 years experience in base and precious metal exploration and specialises in interpretation of  Electromagnetic and Induced Polarisation methods.  He is a member of the AIG, ASEG and SEG.

Both presentations were received with interest, followed by lively Q&A session and the informal exchange over the refreshments.

The Almaty Mining Club was conceived in 2011 by SRK Consulting (Kazakhstan), KPMG, and the Central Asian Mining Union to provide a regular focused forum for discussions on current issues facing the industry, bringing together miners, suppliers, Government agents and financiers all with a stake in the dynamic mining and minerals business. After three years, the Club has become a regular get-together of mining people in Almaty, providing a venue where industry people can all gather, meet new and old faces, and gain new insights to current events.
