This presentation summarizes a talk given during the inaugural workshop of the Cave Mining Forum.

This presentation will highlight one of the cave mining phenomenon related to surface and ground water. Water combined with clays and fine particles generated by caving processes could result in mudrushes and mudflows. This presentation will also include the discussion about mitigation strategies and mudrush risk assessments.

Jarek Jakubec

Jarek Jakubec has 30 years of operating and consulting experience in the mining industry. He specializes in mass mining, rock mechanics, diamond mining, and technical auditing.

As a cave mining expert, Jarek has worked on most of the world’s caving and sublevel caving projects. He has participated in several international research projects, including the Mass Mining Technology initiative, and worked with Dr. Laubscher to develop a rock mass classification system for caving mines. With Gemcom Software, Jarek developed a planning tool for sublevel caving mines and has lectured on cave mining on five continents.

Jarek acted as an expert witness in the Northparkes cave mine collapse court case and is a Qualified Person in terms of NI 43-101.

Dan Mackie

Dan Mackie has over twelve years of  experience in mining hydrogeology and water resources.  Mr. Mackie specializes in hydrogeological characterization, design of depressurization, dewatering and groundwater management systems for open pit and underground mines, as well as water resource assessments.  He has worked with multi-disciplinary teams on all phases of engineering study, environmental assessments and permitting for new or expanding mines.  Mr. Mackie provides inputs to geotechnical and water management options assessment or design, including issue identification and risk assessment, dewatering requirements, management and mitigation options.
